How to Write Earth Sciences Research Papers, Term Papers & Thesis
Earth sciences term papers analyze and investigate not only natural phenomena of the past but also of the present. Earth sciences or natural sciences term papers are referenced to APA or CSE/CBE Style. Nevertheless, some colleges may follow different reference styles.
Natural sciences investigate various different aspects of the planet that may not also be characteristic but rather derived feature. Often such classifications help in producing credible hypotheses that elaborate a natural phenomenon and its development. Students are tested on their ability to come up with opposing or contradictory arguments to prove the validity of their findings.
The immediate physical environment in question inhabited by human beings is often not the only area examined in this field. For instance, the sub layers of the Earth along with oceans and air atmosphere are also included within the field. High school level and even college level term papers are written with a narrow topic title that is specific to one of the sub disciplines of Earth sciences such as geography.
Earth science term papers are mainly narrowed and comparatively uncomplicated pertaining to either of the four spheres. These include: lithosphere that deals with rocks; hydrosphere that deals with the study of water; atmosphere that with the study of air and lastly, biosphere which is the study of life.
The study of earth sciences basically comprises of scientific methods for which hypotheses have to be formulated after observations and collection of relevant data. The hypothesis is tested for validity before it can be considered true. Both quantitative and qualitative data hold critical values in earth sciences. However, students often chose qualitative approach in term papers and research papers.
College level term papers give students the choice of choosing a relevant subject, literature review, data gathering approach and even the type of research approach. Students are judged on their ability to put their course learning in the form of research papers. When student’s quote the works of different authors, they need to make sure that it is correctly cited and formatted so as to not be misidentified for plagiarism.
At the same time, students should understand the correct format of a term paper. It is not another high school book report but rather an eclectic information paper that shows the exhaustive reading undertaken by the student. The precise paper formatting and organization may vary from college to college.
Nevertheless, most term papers follow this pattern. First is the introduction that focuses the topic and explicitly states the problem statement followed by background and presentation. Then, the discussion begins where the student is expected to give strong arguments regarding the problem statement followed by conclusion that summarizes new findings. Students should relate their findings with existing research and reference them in the required citation style. Many lose easy marks through incorrect citations.
